The Portuguese Super Cup chronology began in 1978–79 and 1979–80 with two editions labelled unofficial by the FPF and called Super-Taça. Since 1980–81 the competition has officially been staged as the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira between the league champions and cup winners; the losing cup finalists qualify after a double. It was generally played over two legs through 1999–2000, with replays where required, and as a single match since 2000–01. Unofficial and official wins remain separate title lines.
