The Russian Super Cup (Суперкубок России) has opened the new Russian football season since 2003. It is normally a single match between the reigning Russian champions and Russian Cup winners; when one club wins the double, the league runners-up normally take the other place. The competition forms a separate title lineage from the Soviet Season Cup. Sponsor names are not treated as separate competition names. The challenge trophy is awarded permanently to a club after three consecutive wins or five wins in total.
